Episode 328: John Jakus | The Secret to Building Player-Led Teams

What if the key to becoming a better basketball coach isn't controlling more, but learning when to let go?

In Episode 328 of the JAMODI Podcast, presented by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC), Florida Atlantic University Head Men's Basketball Coach John Jakus joins Matt Sayman for an honest conversation about leadership, culture, communication, and building player-led teams.

Drawing from his experiences coaching alongside Scott Drew at Baylor and Mark Few at Gonzaga, Jakus shares lessons about building championship cultures, developing players, and leading through today's changing college basketball landscape.

In this episode, you'll learn:

🏀 Why the best teams are led by players, not just coaches

🏀 How to confront players without damaging relationships

🏀 Why your words, timing, and emotional control matter

🏀 How to build a culture players actually understand and live

🏀 Why great coaches must be willing to evaluate themselves

🏀 How to develop players even when they may eventually leave

🏀 Why delegation and empowering assistant coaches make teams stronger

🏀 How faith, family, and humility shape lasting leadership

One of the biggest lessons from this conversation: Great coaching isn't about having every answer. It's about continually asking who you want to become and learning how to lead others more effectively.

Whether you're a high school coach, college coach, assistant coach, or aspiring leader, this episode offers practical ideas you can take directly into your program.
